Effect of an Educational Program for Patients after Retinal Detachment Surgery on their Performance and Postoperative Pain Management

Background: Retinal detachment describes an emergency situation in which a thin layer of tissue (the retina) at the back of eye pulls away from its normal position. Retinal detachment separates retinal cells layer blood vessels that provides oxygen and nourishment. The longer left untreated, greater risk of permanent vision loss affected eye. Aim: study aimed to evaluate effect of an educational program for patients after surgery on their performance and postoperative pain management. Methods: following hypotheses were formulated to achieve aim. H1: Performance group will be improved post program implementation than control group. H2: able to manage post H3: There be significant correlation between patients’ performance and management program implementation A quasi-experimental research design was utilized to conduct current ophthalmology department Benha University Hospital. A purposive sample (100) adult included in this study. Three tools used, knowledge assessment questionnaire, the patients’ practice observational checklist regarding care visual analogue scale to assess severity. Results: This shows most had unsatisfactory level total inadequate pain management pre-program (68% and 76%). result significantly all elements post-program implementation, where majority satisfactory level of their adequate (78% 75%). Conclusion: The majority studied unsatisfactory (knowledge and practice) concerning pre program implementation. In contrast, statistically significant improvement Also, there was significant positive management post supports hypotheses. study recommended continuous in-service training programs repeating high probability generalization findings.
